Catching Fire, the second installment in The Hunger Games trilogy, is set to be in the big screens by November 22nd. While counting down the days, it would not hurt to read its novel version…
and as the pages were flipped one after the other, the idea really wasn’t a bad idea.
Of course, it can be hard to compare a book to its movie adaptation. They are different art forms. But if you allow yourself to embrace the book as it is- paper filled with words that tell a story with equal servings of fear, grief, romance, anger, etc., you may find all three books (The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay) to be wonderful masterpieces.
Suzanne Collins did a brilliant job to pen together numerous realizations (such as, who really benefits from war?) while holding on to the reader’s attention in every chapter. There is little chance to put the book down, the question after every chapter is, “What happens next???” and you find yourself proceeding to the next one.
The story is being narrated by the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen. It happens in a time when what used to be North America becomes Panem. After the war, the country is divided into 12 districts, each under the cruel rule of the Capitol. Each year, as a reminder to those in the districts that a rebellion is not an option, the Hunger Games is held. It is similar to the gladiator fights that once were a form of entertainment among the ancient Romans- except in the Games the participants are teenagers and only ONE survives. Along with political intrigues and romantic dilemma, Katniss Everdeen’s life is changed.
If you decide to read the books or not, remember that November 22 is the date when we meet Katniss in the movies once again.
