The moment I got hold of Ms. Agay Llanera‘s debut novella, Vintage Love, I could not “put it down” (I was reading it on Kindle). But before I continue on gushing about this heartwarming chick lit, here is a synopsis of what it’s all about:
26-year-old Crissy Lopez’s life is in dire need of a makeover. Her wardrobe revolves around ratty shirts and beat-up sneaks; her grueling schedule as a TV Executive leaves no room for a social life; and worst of all, she’s still hung up on the Evil Ex who left her five years ago.
When her fashionable grand-aunt passes away and leaves behind a roomful of vintage stuff, the Shy Stylista inside Crissy gradually resurfaces. Soon, she feels like she’s making progress — with a budding lovelife to boot! But the grim ghost of her past catches up with her, threatening to push her back into depression. To finally move on, Crissy learns that walking away is not enough. This time, she needs to take a leap of faith.
From page 1, I was literally hooked. The flow of the conversations and plot engaged me. Maybe it was because the heroine, Crissy, was undergoing life dramas that a lot of people can relate to (heartbreak, weight gain, career dilemmas) or simply because the author’s writing style was just wonderful.
The book reminded me of reading a Sophie Kinsella novel. It had the right amount of humor, kilig and melodramatic elements. But most importantly, it contained lessons and points of reflection such as: take care of and never lose yourself, do what you love to do, let go of the people who do not know your worth and what is meant to be will be.
While reading it, I found myself saying that it could easily pass to be adapted for television. Yes, it is that great. Despite the brevity of the story, Ms. Agay masterfully combined all of the aforementioned elements without compromising the story itself.
It will make you reassess your life as well. In the hubbub and pressures of the adult world, there are times when you will lose yourself. In Crissy’s case, she found herself back through the vintage clothes her grandaunt left behind. In a subtle manner, Vintage Love, reinforces the fact that fashion is a means of self-expression. It doesn’t hurt to dress well- it doesn’t have to be designer clothes at all.
Finding true love is also one of the hooks of the book. The manner of how Crissy met a decent guy while still mourning her breakup with her ex (which was already half a decade ago), reminds the reader that chance encounters can exist. Who knows?
Whether you’re in search of a feel-good read or simply wanting to have something to read while commuting, during break or waiting for an appointment, Vintage Love just may be the book that you’ve been looking for.
It is available in Amazon and Smashwords.
