Dear chick lit fans, it’s another week for a blog tour. This post was supposed to be up yesterday but due to technical difficulties, there is a slight delay. The good news is, you can now find out which writers influenced Ms. Chris Mariano, the featured author this week.

The writers/authors who have influenced her writing skills.

I’ve always had a healthy appetite for stories. I always think that it’s because my mother and my aunt fed me a steady diet of Grimm and Greek myths that I even picked up a pencil in the first place. Neither are authors but when it comes to writing influences, they should be on top of my list.

But. Writers! First would be award-winning poet Luisa Igloria, who was both ‘mommy’ and mentor to me back in college. I didn’t take a poetry class under her though; instead I picked one on writing non-fiction. She helped temper my writing. She told me I wrote best when I wasn’t being dramatic.

Another author who had a big impact on my early writing was Zilpha Keatley Snyder. She wrote YA books that walked the line between fantasy and reality. Her books were not necessarily about secondary worlds or paranormal creatures in our midst. Most of the time she gave life to really imaginative people who had the power to affect those around them.

Other authors who continue to influence my writing are Kelly Link and Elizabeth Hand. They both write excellent speculative fiction. I think these are authors whose writing styles are very similar to mine — only theirs have such a transformative power that I can only wish that I were half as good. I only came across their work as an adult but since then I’ve tried to emulate their lyrical writing styles.

While these authors don’t really write contemporary romances, they have greatly influenced me. It’s more than just their turn-of-phrase. It’s also how they choose to see the world around them — often in strange, dreamlike set pieces — and how they use these to lure curious readers like me.

ABOUT THE BOOK

20130916-224155.jpg

1) She has amnesia.
2) She’s on the run from her father’s creditors.
3) She’s enjoying her last days on earth.

Ever since Jang Min Hee walked into Gio’s small museum, she’s given him one excuse after another about why she’s vacationing at scenic Boracay Island. Rarely has Gio’s neat and organized world been shaken like this. Soon he finds himself scrambling over rocks, hiding in dressing rooms, and dragging her out of bars. But how can Gio tell what’s true from what isn’t? Their worlds are getting unraveled — one story at a time.
